Do you see problems and break your head over solutions? Are you tired of putting out the same fires over and over again and want a more permanent approach? The problem-solving thinking training teaches you to solve problems with lasting results.

Learning objectives

After this training, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the core of a problem.
  • Deploy appropriate methods and techniques to various situations.
  • Guide groups to find creative and effective solutions.
  • Solve problems in a more sustainable way.

This training programme consists of 4 half-day modules. In each module, we first bring the general framework. Then we put the principles and techniques into practice and participants work through examples and cases that fit their own work situation.

Day 1 - Techniques

  1. Understanding your own thinking and approach
  • Evolution of thinking mapped out.
  • The difference between analytical and synthetic thinking.
    • Problem-oriented versus solution-oriented thinking.
    • How do you treat a problem?
    • How do you look at a problem?
    • How do you talk about it with colleagues/employees?
    • How do you tackle it?
  • Firefighting versus sustainable solutions.
  1. Techniques for identifying problems
  • Distinguishing between symptoms and the core of the problem.
  • Breaking down problems
    • SWOT Analysis
    • Root Cause Analysis
    • Kano Model Analysis
    • Pareto analysis
    • Ishikawa fishbone diagram
    • Causal Loop Diagram
    • S.C.O.R.E.
  • Rephrase questions problem-solving.
  • Presenting problems visually.

Day 2 — Applications

  1. Thinking techniques
  • Convergent and divergent thinking
  • Lateral thinking ('Outside the box' thinking)
  • Systems thinking
  • Scenario thinking
  • Innovative thinking
  • Seeking creative solutions from different angles
  • Imagineering technique
  1. Group facilitation
  • Conversation techniques; finding out the question behind the question
  • Solving problems in the group
  • Recognising and preventing groupthink and other thinking errors
  • Problem-solving meetings and joint decision-making
